Happy Lunar New Year!

Despite my inability to carry out simple preparations (sorry Michelle) we had a delicious dinner of sushi, kimbap, pork dumplings, and fried fish thanks mostly to Michelle and Tian An, with help from Grace and Irene.

First, Tian An fried the fish while Grace, Michelle and I folded dumplings using the dumpling skins Grace bought from the city and the filling (pork, cucumber, cilantro) that Michelle had prepared. Then we moved on to rolling sushi and kimbap, while discussing the differences between the two.

Here are our delicious ingredients: the bag of kim (upper right), the soy sauce (lower right), our big-ass freaky Asian knife (middle right) and on the cutting board: daikon, avocado, smoked salmon, and chopped cucumber, next to two beautiful sushi rolls Irene made with her special sushi-making mats.

Irene has lots of better pictures that I'll try to procure (I thought of using that word because I initially mistyped 'picture' at the beginning of this sentence!).

One last note--the dipping sauce for the dumplings and fish was delicious: soy sauce, sugar, and chopped ginger and cilantro.

First Week In (or Out)

I feel like I haven't written in forever! Maybe the idea of writing this blog into the second (and last) semester was daunting. Or frightening. Or maybe I've just been lazy this past week. In my defense, it's been REALLY cold, and it snowed at least twice in this week, and that makes everyone sleepy.

Well we've got lots of news in just the first week back, some of which will have to wait. I was filming my housemates (gee, what a surprise, huh?) and got a video of a lot of good moments happening in a very brief amount of time. I can't post it, however, for reasons of security (see the next paragraph) and because I really want to edit this video and clean it up a bit. I intended to save it and use clips of it to make a 'Best Of' montage, but as I now understand why my free video editing program is free (thanks for nothing, Avidemux!) that'll have to wait until I get myself into the DMZ (not the Korean one) and edit it properly.


Our next piece of big news: Sloth is a finalist! I won't write all about it until we get confirmation about the final decision, and I certainly won't post the video of us trying to figure out a variation of the "Happy Birthday to You" song that would be appropriate for a nominee. Hoo boy.

This brings us up to yesterday, Saturday, where we did pretty much nothing. Oh, except make Jill drive us all to Adam's in the middle of a blizzard. That was great. Regardless, I have a pretty funny video of Grace, Tian An and Michelle, but I'm not allowed to post that one either. Then Michelle's birthday party in the THs was yesterday evening.

And today, we're now making dumplings, sushi/kimbap, and fried fish for a Lunar New Year dinner! Pictures and video to follow!

The year is new, the food is old, the wine is froze, the fridge has mold. TA37.

The Beginning of the End

Jo got back last Tuesday. He has some nifty new glasses; I'll post pictures ASAP. Then yesterday Stuart and I had a class together. Oh boy.

Today I noticed Grace's schedule hanging outside her door, and it brought a tear to my eye (and a twitch to my photo-taking finger):

I gotta get a better cameraphone. Anyway, in other news, we still haven't finished Ghot Boda Namja! It's getting serious. We have five episodes to go, and I'm just dying to find out which androgynous makeup-wearing rich boy Jan Di will marry!!!

24 Hour Visit Updates

Back home at not-Vassar! Just wanted to post some pictures of our adventures. The real deal begins this Sunday with the Return of Grace!

Hi Scharr With a Vengeance!

I'm baaaack! Just for 24 hours. I'm here to see Stuart and Michelle, check up on dear old TA37, do some food shopping, water my plant, and go swingdancing tonight! Then I'll be back for real this Sunday to start the spring semester.

Only problem is, I left my keys at home. Dumb. Well Michelle and Pengpeng and I went food shopping and then Stuart let us in and we whipped up a FANTASTIC dinner:

TA37's New Year, Old Food Extravaganza

1) A salad comprised of bitter lettuce, roasted onions, celery, leftover popcorn shrimp and parmesan cheese, sprinkled with a dash of Mike's Hard Lemonade for zing. (Pro Tip: the specific vegetables you use don't matter; just use any vegetables in your fridge that don't look like they could kill a womp-womp).

2) Freezer-burned tater tots with sriracha sauce and ketchup borrowed from Michelle's house.

3) Swiss Mist hot chocolate to chase.


After dinner the discussion has been entirely about getting jobs. If this were a Japanese anime, the folks in Vassar's CDO would be sneezing up a storm right now. Just sayin'.

We've been discussing the number of jobs we've already gotten rejected from. Now I just overheard something about adding "21 years of breathing experience" on a resume. Things are looking bleak for us liberal arts majors.

P.S. the title of this blog post is a pun on "Die Hard with a Vengeance." Get it???

Ye were fooled....

Although most residents have departed from the cozy TA 37.....there was one to rule it alone!!!

I, Slothman, am still here. Jill was mistaken, for the blog shall live on with my adventures here....

BTW I am busy finishing my final papers, only 31pages to go and then my first thesis to complete!!!
